Starting out with a plan…

Start with the Calendar…

I keep finding new starting points with this blog, or at least, restarting with the same goal; to inspire others to learn, explore, and create. It all has to be through my own experiences, and written in the form of concept and purpose. I wish not to be a teacher, while others already teach and do it well. My role has always been to help get started, and start with curiosity.

When I first started Blogging about organizing, it was directed towards folders and files. But like any subject organizing can include events and everyday activities. To anyone truly looking for creating purpose with a computer or smartphone, one of the most available and useful app or program is the calendar.

Calendars come to mind when it comes to remembering birthdays, anniversaries, events and occasions. They can also be used in the form of ledgers, diaries, and recorded activities (as they occur). The best part of using the calendar App or program is that the concept and purpose is already self evident. It is when making it purposeful in your everyday life that it becomes somewhat a hassle to build that self discipline to maintain, update, edit, and remove expired information.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

Making a record of family and friend’s birthdays and Anniversaries can be a project, and the thought of seeing it through to completion may make you choose to wait until you make time for such a huge project. But, I am trying to get the use of the computer, smartphone, and their programs to be used throughout your everyday activities, and not make the use of a computer a hobby or project.

The best and easiest (or manageable) process, is to record these events as they happen. Thanks to such social networking’s such as Facebook, My Space, AOL,  MSN, Google, and all they others, many of these activities are added by the individual user themselves. It is simply available by being associated on the network with them. Now, as their birthdate or anniversary comes up, you can record it on your own calendar. Why if it is already on the network? First, you may not always have a network connection; and secondly, when later reviewing you calendar of upcoming events, they show up in your own calendar, which you would use on a daily basis for personal and business reasons.

Appointments and Schedules

I could simply have made a list of possibilities for a Calendar, but much here was always self evident, and easily dismissed. Remember, I started this Blog article expressing your plan to give your device or machine more purpose. It challenges us all towards discipline, as well as expressive and detailed. And, it truly is a challenge to keep updated…unless you make it an everyday activity.

When it comes to Appointments, this is using the Calendar for a future event, and most of us already do that…just not through the smartphone or computer. Again, it is giving that device an advancing purpose. Schedules also can be done, whether it is your school class schedule, or your billings. Almost all calendars allow you to make these type of “data entries” a reoccurring event; and still allow you to use the comment on any given date to describe a transaction or study (homework) course for that specific date. Other calendars would need you to add in changing comments separately, because what goes in the comment may follow through all reoccurring comments. So, if scheduling, make it an “All Day Event”, then when you need make a comment, add it with the same subject title (with your remarks), but as a time frame of when you did it (i.e., 9:00 AM Homeroom; Reminded teacher of planned absentee date for doctor appointment).

Private and Sync

Much of what you start recording is for your eyes only, but should you wish to share certain events with parents or sibling, many calendars allow you to build two separate calendars. The main can be private, and never shared, while the second can be shared through networking services, such as AOL, MSN, and Google (provided who you are sharing it with uses the same Internet service provider (Again, Google, AOL, MSN, etc.). The last option is to make it public, which then, anyone can see. Whatever you choose, syncing to the network takes a few setting configurations, but now what you sync is not only available on your smartphone or computer, but also accessible by you through any computer, by signing into that service with your account. So, if the smartphone battery losses its charge, you can use another device to see you calendar.

Calendar Sharing

I like using Google Calendar. It allows me to simply share a specific event or share the whole calendar with family. Businesses favor this for their employees. No reason the same concept could be used by family and friends. Of course, all involved would desire this type of communication.

Example: Your Son or Daughter will be going to college. Without constant calling to make sure everything is alright, a shared calendar can be used to know where they are (or should be), and depending on their willingness, they can describe how the session went, homework, and even the course issues. At the same time, you might share them a calendar, so they know when the can call you, for advice, encouragement, and sometimes more money. Having a shared Calendar showing your in a meeting from 2:00 PM until 2:30 PM, means don’t call. If it is money, expect a call at exactly 2:31PM.

Record of events

As a truck driver, any work done, traveled, stopped, and off duty, on what is known as a Driver’s Daily Log. It is done daily. Well, that is also a calendar. It is used by many, besides the driver, to verify where they were, the hours they did (so they know how many hours they have left), and the remarks can include in detail any issues or additional work that occurred. At a personal level, it is documenting you activities that could come in handy later, and without knowing what for. “Where were you?”, “What did you do?”, and “Did you you have?”

For me, the calendar can be a record of what Blog I wrote, to help prevent writing about it again, or even referring back to the original writings, and by date.

It’s about routine

Nothing about these machines and devices is something you are born knowing. It takes curiosity, experimentation, study, and learning. Building a routine so it is second nature is also an ongoing achievement. This routine is an ongoing exercise…even for me. Many other bloggers have something on a daily, weekly, and even monthly basis. When you look at my timelines, well, it looks more like a “mood thing”. Unfortunately, it has to do with not specializing in computers, or just truck driving, nor did I just stay with working with spreadsheets. I am constantly working on my own daily routines, and Blogging is supposed to be my “close second” priority…which means that first priority keeps me away. In short, routines vary for all of us. But starting out with the use of a calendar, building any type of routine would be a good starting point. It is like any routine where maintaining it is where we all for short.

The April Fool In Me

For the last three years I have had issues making the blog a priority. It can be hard when you have not developed something that is geared to making some kind of a profit down the road. But, the purpose of goals should be more valuable than currency. It is a form of expression, sharing thoughts, and communication.

The First week of April

My home time scheduled for the last week of March ran right into the first few days of April. The second day of home time involved getting the mail and paying bills (the first day is typically spent cleaning and prepping the truck for the next time out…I get four days off, for every 28 days). This is also time to see my brother and other family, and simply go shopping or drink. Still, the work I do for myself follows me home.

I am attempting to change my routine around, and do almost all the work I save for Home Time in the truck. That includes bills, taxes, records keeping, and back ups. This is a struggle to build, since I can drive up to eleven hours and work fourteen hours on any given day. I have attempted to at least setup the computer to backup on DVD, maybe just one a night. But, by the time the truck shuts down, it seems that I start to shut down too. I’m tired, and the pillow seems to be such a seductive demon of sorts.

The goals and objectives are important. I spend so much time scanning, records building, and downloads, that space on any given machine can quickly be filled. One process that is space consuming is the Dash Cam recorder. The way I configured one can create video files that are in the gigabytes. Still, I do plan on yet another routine that has me review these and find other uses for the archived records.

Anyway…home time. I was able to get some new stuff, and even pay bills. But ten days later, I still needed to review some bills, while forgetting if I had paid others. Now those last few nights with my fluffy goddess (sleep)has made me concerned of what was done, and what still needed attention. So, that brings me here…today, April 10, 2015. My concern started the day before…and so, trying to manage my time, I drove ten and a half hours (with breaks and a fill up), to have time today to review my bills.

For me, there are two main types of backups, Scanning and File backups. By scanning my papers and mail, I am able to also review those bills. The DVD concept has to wait, and backups on yet another external had drive will happen later. Scanning the paperwork also does one more thing…it makes the pile of papers shrink. And, with more than one computer on board, I am able to use one for scanning, while using the other for phone call and online bill paying. For me, it is important to have more than one computer in a truck; the rough environment makes it a real problem that a computer will break, and having a second one onboard is that backup operation all in itself.

So, here I go…like a journal of sort, and a place to took about pillows of the Gods, my attempt to keep an agenda of things that got done, and not done, while in the working world.

April 1, 2015 – Home Time

It was April fools day, so many things were not sent by mail (or email), to assure it was not misunderstood as a joke. So, I went through some of  my gear for the truck, went shopping (I’m a computer geek, so that means Staples and Best Buy), and back home. Some time on Facebook, and writing some checks for April second.

April 2, 2015 – Home Time

A quick run back to work, and load up the truck with my next months journey. While there, I was able to update the permits, and make sure all my records for trip planning, fueling, recaps, etc., were all up to date. Then, to the Post Office to mail out the bills, and then home. From there, I was able to do some online banking.

April 3, 2015 – Back in the truck

It takes a days work to get everything set back up. I use two dash cams to catch views of the road, from two perspectives; two dash cams are redundancy, should one stop working. Last thing I resent is losing an opportunity! Most of my new records keeping (since August 2014) is now on my Access Database, and replicates the process I did in spreadsheets. From time to time, I making an improvement or two, on the spot, and while using that form or report.  Some resolutions have been how the forms appear, while the reports are in what order should it appear.

April 4, 2015

I went on Facebook, and found out that a cousin had died…

…I spent the day working, rolling, and keeping up with the conversation on Facebook when the truck was stopped.

April 5, 2015

Just kept rolling and stayed focused on the loads at hand. All three of my netbooks were now back in operation, like when I was an Independent Contractor. The HP Pavilion is used for that database, I named the Driver’s database, while the second HP was being used for trip planning (maps), and the Driver’s Daily Log. The E machine was put back into service to do all the mapping and plans, and leaving the second machine to just the Driver’s Daily Logs. This second netbook will eventually become the local webserver for simple webpages and downloads. It also was the original “office”, so it still will be used for tax purposes. The files that were removed from the machine will be put back, the 2014 taxes will be done, printed, and mailed, and then all files will again be removed from the machine…for security reasons.

April 6, 2015

More loads and work, and the occasional repair of another trailer light, and alike…I have a record form for all repairs on the truck and trailers too. A Uniden Wi-Fi camera was put into service3 for night time use and security. Its personal purpose is to view the outside world, when I first wake up, to see what is going on beyond the curtains that keep me out of sight.

April 7, 2015

Back into the swing of things…I am still not making DVD backups in the truck a routine, so much of the video backups are copied to an external hard drive. Completed loads’ paperwork are scanned for my personal records, and then sent through Transflo Express [Pegasus trademark], so I can get credit for delivery. Oh, and yes, I have a database form to record what was sent (and its confirmation number), and I have an unbroken routine for also downloading an offline copy of the confirmation website through Transflo Express.

Another load, and I am rolling.

April 8, 2015

I am back to reviewing the weather online as a morning routine. I saw the news, and they already had mentioned the first tornado of the season…I think it was in Oklahoma…again. Knowing the weather is a tool concept I’ll keep pushing in some blogs….especially after 2011, when I learned of tornados that were behind me…after the fact. So, knowing the weather before you go will help plan for a safer delivery. OK, done. Winking smile

By the way, I saw a rain storm with electrical activity coming my way, from Illinois. It caught up with me that night…in Ohio. Heavy rain and lightening. I sat it out, before picking up my next load.

April 9, 2015

I awoke to more rain and lightening, and was ready to roll. My goal was to get ahead of the band of rain proceeding eastward. It took more than two hours to get to the other side, and even see a little sunshine…traffic stop on the Interstate…construction. I was able to fuel up, and take a thirty minute mandatory break…as that storm rolled right over me. Here we go again.

It would be night fall before I found myself right at the beginning of the storm. By this time I was nearing the Pennsylvania-New York State line. Fog was thickening….and the temperature dropped to 34 degrees. I need to get ahead of this! I finally stopped in Montgomery Township, New York for the night. 10 1/2 hours of driving with two breaks, on for filling the truck.

April 10, 2015

Now, I have time for the Bills….much to my relief, I had paid the ones I was concerned about online. Scanning, scanning, scanning, for about two hours. That paper pile was quite smaller. I also had time to blog one, and submit a second found blog. Time for laundry, and a third blog…this one.

OK, I am now caught up with something that looks like a short summary, or diary. Laundry should almost be done. I still have to check the weather, PreTrip the truck, and roll to the destination…Cheshire, Connecticut. It is about two hours away….should be less, but there will be the tail end of rush hour, and….construction.

“I Digress”

As the creating writer of this Blog, I have experienced a various degrees of change that seem to have me redirecting this whole scheme. My roles started out as a beginning driver in 2006, with the plan of  joining those with ideas of using the notebook and laptop as working tools in the trucking environment (the primary plan was to have tangible or actual data styles to present in concept teaching; the Commercial Driving experience was only to be temporary). The beginning is always hardest, but as I attempted to go through different positions, and even Independent Contracting opportunities, I found different a constant change in the transportation business that needed a constant change in my own routine. It turns out that the would be a falling out period, when leaving the role as Independent Contractor, and assume the role as an employed OTR Truck Driver.

It is amazing how you can get so consumed into such a lifestyle, and get caught up in your own desires and dreams. The last two months was invested in trying to figure out what occurred. In February 2014, I was so close to going to the next level, and become an Owner-Operator, then stopped. Six months would pass, and I would make excuses, and blame other persons for the need to just stop. It took that time to realize…I had become the Truck Driver. I lost focus of this whole purpose of building spreadsheets, and other files in examples, and even create “How To” videos.  Somehow, I became what I never thought I could ever aspire to. In the beginning, I thought I would eventually be told that I just didn’t have “the stuff” to be a professional driver.

There is a workshop (now storage) awaiting for me to get back to the original plan, of studio, repairs, and project building.

Keeping The Truck, and Everything Rolling

Like  that old saying, “One step forward, and two steps back”, I find myself restarting that routine I  have mentioned in past blogs. Since 2013 (the whole year), I found myself leaving the opportunity of advancing to Owner Operator, and in the summer of 2014, leaving the truck at home, and becoming a Company over the road driver.  It was a necessary objective, since much of my blog time in the three years of Lease Purchase (2009-2013), and Independent Contracting (Jan. 2013-Jan. 2014), was geared to building spreadsheets and workbooks. A series of spreadsheets for different periods of time, and different activities, make up a workbook. Much to say, most of it was hints and concepts, leaving the reader with the task of making sense of their own objectives in spreadsheets to their own ability. The reason was to prevent from ever being misunderstood as an instructor or teacher.

But, almost like jumping in “head first” into the Lease Purchase program, I found getting into the role of Owner-Operator needing more thought and planning, than just advancing to the new role, like I had attempted to. There was support, but the timing was incredibly daunting, and I was exhausted. So, the truck went into mothball stage (it is probably rusting), and I took six months to rethink my purpose in blogging, and the still most talked about “How To” Videos, and also fancied into another computer based project, and wrote a fictional story. It is not published, but has been reviewed by at least one person, and I need to go back, and add detail to one of the chapters, before copyrighting and publishing. I continued with the previous work of building spreadsheets, and moved into Access Database project. That actually was to replace the spreadsheet concept, and develop another form of records keeping. The database becomes the library of finished works that can be used for analyzing and business trends. It also became the current replacement of “data Entry” of daily activities, while building reports, and other useful queries for the current activities.

The database concept is where much of this year and the following years work will take me in this blog. But instead of just expressing concepts and ideas, I will share my current works and activities, to include providing downloadable files to use. Of course, most of it will be related to trucking, but it can apply to any business, records building, and strategy. It is the goal to have all this lead to building and providing products in their simplest forms, and challenge the reader and user to not only use and apply the products, but to advance in their abilities, and change the files to suit their own individual business and personal needs.

Looking back at my work, and before simply making much of it download files, I recognized how advancing the project had become, which would be good if I was doing this for simply me. The work, and files quickly became for the use of lease purchase driving, falling short for a company driver, and stopped, before it could be expressed for owner operators too. So, I am back to driving a company truck, and now developing files for the Independent Contractor, simplifying it for the company driver, and expressing it as a starting point for future owner operators. And yet, the work I am trying to create is to inspire any individual and business, using the trucking industry as simply a theme. I am striving to convince the reader that I am writing about computers, the uses, and practical activities, as a self proclaimed computer geek, and not a truck driver (of over seven years), making work for a specific career or market.

Hello world!

Hello world!

Todd Harris, an Independent Contractor, and an “Over the Road Truck Driver”, is evolving through the ownership of one truck, as one person, and working towards creating opportunities and incentives to others to follow and lead in the goals to starting up other Small Business.

Although it appears this would be focused on Transportation, the design and development is to focus on any Small Business in General, and find general guidelines for those business ventures that specialize in any business field.

The project still remains centered around computing, and networking, as Todd Harris continues his own objectives of “How To” concepts. The  main objective of this blog is to promote Small Business, give suggestions and comments, and as the originating business name of Harris-Yahnig Resources, present avenues (or paths) for future, and promising business minded individuals to explore.

May 25, 2012–Day 100

May 25, 2012–Day 100

The hardest thing was knowing that when it comes to keeping up with two separate blogs, I would have to finally make time to treat the truck, like an office, become like a reporter, and make wherever I am, the time and a place to write. First day was a full day driving, and already, it wouldn’t be until a down time on May 28, 2012, before I would include this for day 100. Three days later, and I am just now catching up.

Map052512MtJulietTN_ToledoOHA long days travel, in any vehicle, can be work. And, although, this is the lifestyle I have done for less than six years, adding to the travels to report in the form of a blog, only adds to a long day.

May 26th, 2012 – Day 99 Paperwork to catch up on…

May 26th, 2012 – Day 99 Paperwork to catch up on…

CalendarMay26_2012

The saying goes, “some days are diamonds, and some days are stone”. In five years, I see periods of busy times, and slow periods in the transportation field. Mostly, a day of a holiday is the time to catch up on unfinished paperwork, and writing out thoughts. Importantly, it is a time to wind down, and find that second wind to roll hard, until the next low period. Still, it is hard to forecast those slow periods exactly, so like you work hard, you play hard.

It is a chance for me to catch up on my computer records, backup my files, and Clean the truck. The bonus is to have the television on, and challenging myself to stay focused on the task at hand. In a sense, although I am utilizing my time to catch up, I still note the true purpose to relax, and set a steady and comforting pace to this “down time”. I was even going to make time to catch up with this blog, since the day before was the first day of my 100 day countdown to finishing a contract, with the ownership of a truck being the primary goal of others who get involved in this program.

By now, you know my goal is to boast the point that during a six year involvement with a CDL, I was able to build a business, and record, on computer. To many it is not much to boast about. But if you realize that a personal computer can be fragile as glass to extreme weather, and the rugged travels of a truck, this is not reasonable to even try. My focus was to get the most out of a personal computer, and show the expanding possibilities to others, but to suggest it would be dismissed as a waste of time. Going through this lead to finding strengths and weaknesses, not only in a common machine, but within myself.

Anyway, there is already the originating blog to make that boast on.  This one just records the day’s struggle and completed work. With all my paperwork submitted to the company, and backed up, and the floor and interior walls of the truck washed by hand, I was making real progress. By noontime, someone knocked on the door of the truck, and pointed out that I had a flat tire. That turned a “diamond day” to stone. It took time to try to dismiss that lousy flat, and I never could get back to my list of tasks to do. With the television on, I eventually took a nap.

I never got a chance to write a blog, and this was part of my next down time (making it two days late). In some sense, I really am having trouble with the concept of “switching gears”. But taking in account that I am making the effort to be “up-to-date”, it is a rough start.

Day 98 from Flat to Progression…

Day 98 from Flat to Progression…

Leg10f2day 98

Returning to the role of Professional Driving, that routine started with that breakfast, catching up on my log, cleaning the trailer for the next load, and a call for road service. It bothered me that when I rolled the truck back to open the trailer doors, that tire now lost it’s seal from the rim, but now someone had to come out and repair it. Instead, the tire was replaced.

With two hours of my day now gone, it was time to put everything away, setup my e-Machine that records the the trucks travels, and roll for the pickup of the load. It was a cool Sunday morning, now warming and working its way up to 86°. I started making it a habit to stop prior to leaving the interstate and into any given town to assure my directions were leading me to the customer. It makes more sense than to find yourself off the intended path, and have nowhere close to safely stop to get reoriented with the directions. I also took in a meal, since there was a good intention to travel as far as I could, before stopping for the holiday, and avoid holiday traffic.

Everything started going as planned. I even made it to my next stop to scale the load, and assure I was not overweight in areas of the semi truck. A slight adjustment in the tandems before planning to follow through and make it as close to the receiving customer. It was a quiet hour and a half, when my CB shrieked out the weather alarm built into this model. A storm was rolling through Cleveland, Ohio. I was still another hour and a half away, and thought I would get behind the storm. Even that worked out. The storm was passed Cleveland area, and I could see the storm over the horizon (me now in the chase).

The ground didn’t really show it had rained (most likely dried) until I got closer to Austintown, Ohio, and later, was rained on east of Youngstown, Ohio. I decided to stop at the welcome center in Pennsylvania, and allow the storms path to gradually head south east of me. With a rest of fifteen minutes, I began to roll as the night settled in. Pennsylvania had set up a break area for free coffee to entice drivers to stop and take a break, and saw it at the second rest area I later passed.

As the night aged, the road conditions changed, as fog rolled into the cooler night air. With midnight approaching, and the visibility slightly impaired in patches of fog, I took into consideration the holiday, and possible night drivers leaving the bars. It was time to plan a place to stop for the night and next day. I chose Brookville, Pennsylvania, with the intention of catching up with the blogs, and laundry, with the extra time to clean the truck (my new routine for the summer).

All in all, I still had time to make it to my destination, and knowing I would start out to finish my intended destination on Tuesday, I found a place to stay, and have dinner, and a good nights sleep. A day uneventful, started with a disappointing previous day of progress.

Day 97 Memorial day / Blog Day

Day 97 Memorial day / Blog Day

CalendarAy28_2012

The weather report called for “H-O-T”! I called to make it a blogging work day, to keep up with the countdown, and the Driver’s Blog. From 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 PM, a successful day of blogging, and even the start of some raw video. It did get hot, and for  me, it remained a day of “business as usual” as my day was focused on the past days blogging. With it all now caught up (with the conclusion of this blog), it would be now time to catch up with me, my laundry, and maybe…a downtime blog, to be found on the originating Driver’s Blog. There is a shower planned after night falls too.

It took seven hours to work with the blogs of the last four days. A starting point completed, but a progression to improving the routine to achieve. For many, this appears to have no value, but for me, it holds everything that has been in the works for the last six years. I started out with Blogs, through associated Content, and Blogger.com, and made my first three part “how To” video for purchase. It was a disaster. The worst part was not having a direction, and trying to keep the videos general to apply for everything. The confidence was the worst part.

Getting involved in Professional driving was a whim, and I still had my thoughts back in my workshop in Vandling, Pennsylvania. It would take many months before I realized I now had a chance to develop materials that could be used in classes and videos to help understand the importance of computers, especially in Trucking, and to the individual driver. I still think general though. I do not wish to specialize everything around transportation. But, from mapping to scheduling and communication, the “real time uses” of a personal computer grew into calling what I use the machine for as my mobile office.

From Spreadsheets that started out recording my loads and gradually worked into a detailed workbook of spreadsheets covering every aspect of fueling, expenses, mileage, and maintenance. Advancing to using the mapping program not only to plot my destinations, but actually record the daily events of the trucks movement, all for the sake of having real material to build the concept of “how to” do whatever the individuals’ intention is to be. Video recording my “downtime” lead to Velcro and mini camcorder to run while I drive was a bonus too. The camcorders got lighter, and the idea of just recording a four hour run, and saving the file became routine.

Even backing up my records became routine, and although still not done on DVD monthly, the tasks of weekly and daily backup happen without feeling the effort, rather the need. The whole purpose of getting involved in a contract was to keep me from quitting so much, and developing the role of actively running my truck as a business. Now extending to blogging (like a ledger and diary) as the next activity brings me almost full circle to where I started. Everything mentioned took time, and like I stated in the beginning, it started six years ago. It won’t be home until I am back at that workshop though. If I was to extend anyone else to try what I did, I would applaud their motives, and let them know that through their future experiences, nothing will come easy at first, it will always take time to develop self discipline, with the intention of always improving. If nothing else, I can say that it can be done.

And now, to finish this blog like it started…I am concluding this blog (one of many today), my blog day will be over. Time to reflect on Memorial day, my family who have served, with a few still serving. To be thankful for knowing that it is a country worth fighting for, and knowing it comes with a price. To thank those who served before and after me, and others who serve now, thank you! Thoughts and prayers of gratefulness goes to those who sacrificed their lives in the hopes that each one has made a difference. They did, and continue to today. I get to do what I do, knowing I have this chance and opportunity, because they made sure that these opportunities afforded to me would be protected. And, like them, tomorrow, I march on.

Thank a Veteran. Thank a service member serving now. Remember the fallen. And, know that this is our way of life.
